Red sea fan (Gorgonia sp.). This flat, branched structure is formed by a colony of coral-like organisms for protection and support. The fan is orientated to face the prevailing current, and the tiny organisms (not seen) filter plankton from the water using feathery tentacles. Photographed in the Red Sea, Egypt.
