Artist's Description
Scales and lateral line of the Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar. These cycloid scales (circular, untoothed) are found in smooth-finned fishes such as salmon. The age of fish can be determined from the annual growth rings on scales. Pigment in the scale epidermis gives the fish its markings. The lateral line extending from head to tail down each side of the body, is a sense organ with pores. It detects water pressure and direction of currents.
