Artist's Description
Right-hand rule for coils, illustration. This rule is used to determine the direction of the magnetic field induced in a metal by a coil of electrical wire. The coil is gripped with the fingers enclosing the coil in the same direction as the wire is coiled, following the direction of the electrical current (positive to negative). The thumb will then be pointing to the north pole of the electromagnet. If the polarity of the current is reversed, the magnetic field direction also switches. For this diagram without labels, see image C030/2499.
