Artist's Description
Retina. Light micrograph showing a section through a retina in an organotypic culture. The retina has been removed from the eye of a mouse (explanted) and placed in a 3-dimensional environment which mimics the natural conditions of the eye. This enables the effect of varying conditions on the retina to be studied. Stains have been used to show up the different areas. Red shows degenerating photoreceptor cells, green shows cell membranes, and blue shows cell nuclei. Magnification x200 at 10 centimetres wide.
