Description
Raleigh's El Dorado Expedition. 16th-century illustration of a scene from the El Dorado Expedition in north-eastern South America by English soldier and explorer Sir Water Raleigh (c.1554-1618). The expedition took place in April 1595, exploring the Guiana highlands and the Orinoco River. The scene depicted here shows Raleigh taking Spanish colonial leaders Antonio de Berrio and Alvaro Jorge prisoners on the island of Trinidad. Spanish governor Antonio de Berrio had commanded many expeditions in search of El Dorado and his capture aided Raleigh in his search. Raleigh's account of this expedition was published in 'The Discovery of Guiana' (1625). Illustration by Theodor de Bry, published in 1599.
