Artist's Description
Purkinje nerve cell. Computer-enhanced confocal light micrograph of a section through a Purkinje nerve cell (yellow/orange) from the cerebellum of the brain. The Purkinje cell comprises a flask- shaped cell body (yellow) from which branch numerous dendrites (orange). Purkinje cells are found at the junction between the granular layer (blue, lower left) and the molecular layer (green) of the grey matter of the cerebellum. Nerve impulses flow to a Purkinje cell through its dendrites. The cerebellum controls balance, posture and muscle coordination. Magnification unknown.
