Poppy fruit. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through the fruit of an Iceland poppy (Papaver nudicaule), showing the seeds (small dots). The fruit capsule has an outer wall (pericarp). The eight fused chambers have incomplete radial walls or septa (blue). These septa are where the seeds form. The flat top of the fruit capsule shows four ridges that are the sessile stigmas with grooves covered with single multi-cellular hairs to catch pollen grains. Magnification: x8 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
