Pierre Andre Latreille (1762-1833), French zoologist. Latreille was one of the leading entomologists of his time. Initially trained as a priest, he was freed from prison during the French Revolution in 1793 after recognising a rare beetle in the prison. By 1798, he was working at the French Natural History Museum in Paris, curating the arthropod collections. He was made a member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1814, and professor of entomology in 1829. He had been made a knight of the Legion of Honour in 1821 (medal on lapel). This 1834 engraving by Brown is after an 1832 artwork by Pierre Francois Bertonnier (1791-1858).
