Mortuary temple of Hatshepsut at winter solstice. This temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile, near Luxor, Egypt. It dates from the 15th century BC, during the New Kingdom period of Ancient Egypt. Hatshepsut was the fifth pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty, and the second female pharaoh. Egyptian temples were often aligned facing east, designed to be used to mark astronomical events such as the solstices. The solstices occur twice each year around 21 June (summer solstice) and 21 December (winter solstice), coinciding with the longest and shortest days of the year.
