Mitosis (image 6 of 6). Digital three-dimensional immunofluorescent light micrograph of a section through two daughter mammalian cells in inter- phase, the stage between mitotic cell divisions. The chromosomes (blue) replicate during interph- ase. The cells are linked by a residual structure called a midbody (green band, centre). The chrom- osomes are enclosed in a nuclear membrane (not seen). The actin microfilaments (red) and tubulin microtubules (green) of the cytoskeleton maintain the cell's structure. Mitosis produces two ident- ical cells. These are rat kangaroo kidney epithel- ial cells. Magnification: x500 at 6x7cm size. For a sequence of mitosis see images P673/052-057.
