Artist's Description

Market stall. Woman on a market stall selling betel nuts (lower left), bananas (bottom right) and fruit bats (lower right and being displayed). Fruit bats, which feed on fruits, have a delicately flavoured meat and are a local delicacy. Betel nuts, from the betel nut palm tree (Arecha catechu), are chewed for their intoxicating effect which is similar to alcohol. Photographed in Wewak, the capital of Papua New Guinea's East Sepik Province.
