Maize niblet. Light micrograph of a maize niblet, the seed of the maize plant (Zea mays). A seed contains an embryo, a fertilised ovule from which a new plant can grow (green, upper left), and a supply of food called the endosperm (multicoloured/pink, spanning from centre left to upper right). The food is used either while the embryo develops, or during germination. Magnification: x8 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
