Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of H1N1 influenza (flu) virus particles budding from a lung cell. H1N1 is a subtype of the influenza A virus. Influenza A can infect multiple species and is the most virulent human pathogen of the three influenza types (A, B and C), meaning that it has the potential to cause a pandemic. H1N1 was responsible for the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918. Magnification: x1,600 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
