Description
Lily bud. Light micrograph of a cross-section through an immature lily bud (Lilium sp.), showing the male and female reproductive organs of the flower. The pistil (centre) is made up of three fused 'leaves', the edges of which curl inwards and bear the placentas (dark red), which in turn house the ovules and their ova (female sex cells, not seen). Surrounding the pistil are six male anthers, each of which have four pollen sacs filled with developing pollen grains, or male sex cells (pink spots). Magnification: x100 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
