Description
Lead ion collision. Simulated computer display of a lead ion collision as seen by the ALICE (a large ion collider experiment) detector at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. ALICE will detect and record the particles produced when lead ions are accelerated to very high energies and collided within the LHC. It is expected to produce quark-gluon plasma, a primordial state of matter thought to have been present in the Universe microseconds after the Big Bang. The first lead ion collisions took place in November 2010.
