Description
'Jerusalem Delivered', 19th-century illustration. This scene of a Saracen princess being arrayed in stolen armour by her handmaid illustrates an epic poem about the 11th-century First Crusade by Italian poet Torquato Tasso (1544-1595). Tasso was an influential poet of the Italian Renaissance. His most important work (illustrated here) was 'Gerusalemme liberata' (1581, 'Jerusalem Delivered'). The poem consists of 20 sections (cantos). This scene is from the sixth canto, showing the female Muslim character Erminia being arrayed in armour as she prepared to set forth in search for her Christian lover, the crusader knight Tancredi. Artwork published in Paris in 1810.
