Artist's Description
Image of the far side of the moon showing the crash-landing sites (purple dots) of three of the American Orbiter probes. Orbiter was a series of five exploratory probes sent into lunar orbit between 1966 & 1967. They photographed the entire moon in detail & investigated possible landing sites for the manned Apollo missions. Further information distinguishing each individual mission in terms of dates, location of landing sites and general aims may be found in SPL files. Difficulty in communicating with probes on the surface of the far side of the moon makes landing sites there unpopular. A similar image, R340/292, covers the near side of the moon and has many more sites.
