Artist's Description

Horsetail cone, light micrograph. Longitudinal section through a young cone (strobilus) of the rough horsetail (Equisetum hyemale). This is an off-centre section, not passing through the central axis. The structures making up most of the cone are sporophylls consisting of a stalk bearing numerous sack-like hanging sporangia containing the spores. The sporangia consist of large cells (light blue) containing spores (red-black dots). The smaller, hexagonal areas are the stalks. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres high.
