The voyage of HMS Challenger (1873-76) was first seafaring expedition undertaken solely for scientific purposes. The government funded expedition was designed to fill the gap in knowledge about the deep ocean that existed in the 19th Century. A huge number of marine specimens such as these invertebrate forams were collected, they currently represent a powerful resource in the investigation of historical climate change.
