Description
Platinum crystal. Coloured field-ion micrograph of a platinum crystal. This high magnification micro- scopy technique enables the fine atomic structure of the crystal to be determined by the many overlapping geometrical patterns produced here. Platinum metal is used to make jewellery, laboratory ware, electrical contacts, thermo- couples, and catalysts for a variety of reactions. Platinum is a malleable, ductile, unreactive metal with a high melting point and electrical resistance. It can be found naturally as nuggets in sulphide ores but is fairly rare. Magnification: x200, 000 at 6x4. 5cm size.
