Description
False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing a single AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) virus particle (green) budding from the plasma membrane of an infected T4 lymphocyte, a white blood cell. AIDS disables the immune system, rendering the victim liable to a number of fatal infections. The virus (designated HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus) enters the T4 cell where its genetic material (in the form of RNA) is translated into DNA, & may subvert the cell's DNA into making copies of the virus, which bud from the cell wall & destroy the host cell. Magnification: x37,800 at 35mm size.
