Description
MODEL RELEASED. Epidural anaesthetic. Anaesthetist inserting a guide needle into a patient's lower back, which has been numbed with local anaesthetic. The guide needle is to insert a catheter for administering the epidural anaesthetic. The epidural anaesthetic will be injected into the epidural space, the space between the dura mater (the outer membrane covering the spine) and the spinal cord. It will cause a loss of sensation and loss of pain in the lower half of the body in preparation for surgery on this region. Photographed at St. Mary's Hospital in Lacor, Gulu, Uganda.
