Granite invading gneiss. Cut rock surface showing granite (pink) invading gneiss (grey). This rock mixture was formed by molten magma" rising from deep in the Earth and forcing its way into layers of gneiss. The magma has cooled and solidified in- to granite, a type of igneous rock. Diagonal pink bands show where veins of magma penetrated lines of weakness in the gneiss. Gneiss is a type of me- tamorphic rock: it is formed from other types of rock that are baked by intense heat and pressure underground. Most gneiss is made in the roots of mountains, where extreme conditions are generated by continental plates colliding. Magnification x0.25 at 35mm size."
