Artist's Description
Cellular respiration, plants and animals. Illustration of the interdependence of the cellular respiration processes in animal cells and plant cells. In the plant cell (top), water (H2O, blue arrow) and carbon dioxide (CO2, grey arrow) are combined using the energy of sunlight (yellow arrow) to produce sugars (such as dextrose) in a process called photosynthesis, using chlorophyll in the plant cell's chloroplasts. The by-product is oxygen gas (O2, green arrow). In the animal cell (bottom), food (red arrow) is oxidised using oxygen (green arrow) to produce water (blue arrow) and carbon dioxide (grey arrow). The energy in both processes is stored in structures called mitochondria. For this diagram with labels, see C030/2500.
