Description
Cell structure. Confocal light micrograph of tissue culture cells. Fluorescent dyes have been used to label the cytoskeletal proteins actin (green) and microtubulin (red). Actin is found in filaments composed of chains of subunits. It is a key part of the mechanism of muscle contraction, and is involved in movement in a wide range of cell types. Microtubulin is the major component of microtubules, hollow fibres that are important in cell division and form part of the structure of cilia and flagella. Golgi protein is also labelled (blue); it forms part of the Golgi apparatus, which is involved in protein processing and transport. Magnification unknown.
