Artist's Description
Cave fish gill. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a filament from the gill of a cave fish. The Amblyopsidae are a fish family commonly referred to as cavefish, blindfish, or swampfish. They are small freshwater fish found in the dark environments of swamps, caves, and deep lakes. Like other troglobites (animal that lives entirely in the dark parts of caves), amblyopsids exhibit adaptations to these dark environments, including the lack of functional eyes and, in some species, the absence of pigmentation. A gill is a respiratory organ that extracts dissolved oxygen from water and excretes carbon dioxide. Gills usually consist of thin filaments of tissue, branches, or slender, tufted processes that have a highly folded surface to increase surface area. Magnification: x4000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
