Cardiac cell differentiation, fluorescence deconvolution micrograph. Fluorescent dyes have been used to highlight cellular structures, proteins and processes: actin (blue), cell nuclei (yellow), calcium channel protein synthesis (red). Actin is a contractile muscle protein. The two nuclei have formed because the heart cell is differentiating. This is a process where cells change to become more specialised. In adults, the process normally involves adult stem cells dividing to create daugher cells during tissue repair. Calcium channels are vital to the proper functioning of a muscle cell.
