Description
Light microscopy of the brain showing the superficial part of the cerebral cortex which is called grey matter. The cerebral cortex contains billions of neurons a tiny fraction of which are stained black using a silver staining method. The cell bodies of the neurons extend many processes of thin, branching dendrites and one apical dendrite usually thicker in size, extending upwards in the case of the large triangular pyramidal neurons. The single axon which may also be highly branched, extends basally and may project for considerable distances even to the opposite cerebral hemisphere. Magnification x100 when narrow width printed at 10 cm.
