Description
Bronze battering ram probably from a Sicilian workshop of the first half of the 5th century BC. The ram would have been securred to a heavy wooden shaft with nails and probably used against wooden or even stone fortifications. Sometimes the the ram would be hung from the roof of a seige tower, which both protected the attackers and also allowed the ram to be directed more accurately. Most of the teeth on this ram have lost their sharp points probably due to use. So far this is the only bronze battering ram to have survived from the time of classical Greece. It is on exhibition in the Olympia Archaeological Museum.
