Artist's Description
Light micrograph section through a human liver showing autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). This is also known historically as chronic aggressive hepatitis, plasma cell hepatitis, lupoid hepatitis and chronic active hepatitis. The disease describes liver inflammation that occurs when the body's immune system turns against liver cells. The exact cause is unclear, but genetic and environmental factors appear to interact over time in triggering the disease. Ultimately, treatment generally involves a liver transplant.
