Artist's Description
Simplified computer simulation of particle collisions inside the Atlas detector of the Large Hadron Collider, at CERN, Geneva. Two beams of subatomic particles (blue and pink) are accelerated at high energy around the 27km LHC beam-line in opposite directions, and then brought together in a series of collisions within the various detectors. The illustration shows one such collision producing showers of decay particles, indicated by the red and green tracks, which pass through a series of concentric detector arrays (blue rings - most of these rings have been removed for clarity). The colours of the tracks show different decay particles emerging from a proton-proton collision. In 2014 the Higgs Boson was observed by the LHC and CMS detectors.
