Artist's Description

Balloon trio. Engraving of a trio of linked balloons designed to reach the North Pole. This scheme was outlined by the English balloonist Henry Coxwell in 1880. These manned hydrogen- filled balloons were to be equipped with stabilising trail ropes and anchoring grapnels (centre frame). This balloon trio was never constructed. Artwork from the Illustrated London News.
