Artist's Description

Aniline dyeing industry, 19th century. Illustration of distillation apparatus used in the production of methylaniline. Aniline, a blue dye first isolated from indigo in the 1820s. Methylaniline was one of numerous derivatives synthesised in the artificial dye industry founded by Hofmann and Perkins in the 1850s. Artwork from volume 9 (1870) of a republication of 'Les Grandes Usines', a multi-volume work on French industry by journalist and author Julien Turgan (1824-1887).
