Artist's Description

Analogue robot insect. Non-digital (analogue) robot insect Unibug 1.0 walking through sand dunes. In the background is a prarie sunflower bloom. The robot was built by the Canadian roboticist Mark Tilden who invented its control device, the nervous net. The nervous net works by generating a dynamic system of interactions between itself and the outside world. It has no pre-programming, but solves problems by reaching an equilibrium with its environment. It is hoped that robots like this could eventually be used to clear landmines. Tilden works at Los Alamos National Laboratory, USA. Photographed in Colorado, USA, in 1999.
