Description
Obsessive compulsive disorder. Young girl obsessively washing her hands as a symptom of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Hand washing is the most common manifestation of OCD, which is a form of neurosis. The sufferer has recurrent ideas (obsessions) which force them to perform repetitive acts (compulsions). These can take the form of hand washing (as here), counting, or repeated checking of a situation (such as whether a door is open). Conscious efforts to stop performing these tasks often lead to growing anxiety. The disorder can be treated by psychoanalysis or behavioural therapy, but severe cases may only be helped with antidepressant drugs.
