Description
Yongbyon nuclear complex, North Korea, satellite image. This complex, which is located 100 kilometres north of the country's capital Pyongyang, is believed to be producing nuclear material for weapons. The research centre opened in 1963. With Soviet help a 2 kilowatt nuclear research reactor was completed in 1965 and was active by 1967. At upper left is housing and the research area. At upper centre is a 5 megawatt reactor; this was the site of the first reactor. At lower centre right is a 50 megawatt reactor. At lower centre is the plutonium separation complex and at bottom centre is the fuel fabrication complex. Taken by the Ikonos satellite on 25 January 2003.
