Description
Yellowstone supervolcano eruption. Artwork of a huge smoke and ash plume crossing North America due to an eruption of the Yellowstone Caldera supervolcano. The Yellowstone Caldera is a huge geologically active region covering much of Yellowstone National Park, USA. The area is known for its geysers and earthquakes, which are due to a vast underlying chamber of magma (molten rock). The last known eruption of the volcano as a whole is thought to have occurred around 640,000 years ago, an event that spread ash across most of the continent. A similar scale eruption today would kill millions of people and markedly change the world's weather.
