Description
X-43 supersonic test plane. Historical image of an X-43 supersonic aircraft (small, black, centre left) attached to the nose of a modified Pegasus booster rocket, hung from a pylon attached to NASA's B-52B mother ship (large, silver). In November 2004, during a flight over the Pacific Ocean, this hypersonic plane reached record-breaking speeds of Mach 9.6 (nearly 7000 mph). This aircraft was powered by a supersonic combustion ramjet (scramjet) engine and the X-43 project demonstrated that such an engine could work at hypersonic speeds and high altitude. Future aeroplanes and reusable launch vehicles might employ this technology to make quick jumps across the ocean or reach into orbit.
