Description
Wright-Newton parody. Cover artwork for the satirical US magazine 'Puck', showing a Wright brothers' aircraft crashed into an apple tree, with English physicist and mathematician Isaac Newton (1642-1727) shown at lower left as he 'discovers' his law of gravitation. The caption below the illustration refers to the story that Newton's formulation of his theory of gravity was prompted in the 1660s by seeing an apple fall from a tree. The Wright Brothers (Orville Wright, 1871-1948; Wilbur Wright, 1867-1912) made the first controlled, sustained and powered heavier-than-air flight in 1903. Artwork by Louis M. Glackens (1866-1933). Published 5 October 1910.
