Windfall apples picked from the ground and left in a bucket for a week. The picture is of small immature apples that have become detached from the tree. The brown fruits with pinkish off-white rows of fungal spores are infected with the Ascomycete Monolinia fructigena (syn. Sclerotinia fructigena ) so-called brown rot. Brown rot is a serious infection that can spread between fruits by contact. The brown fruit to the right of centre has infected its neighbour (centre, green and brown). This partially green apple will eventually turn completely brown, and rot
