Artist's Description

William Proctor (1817-1874), US pharmacist. Proctor worked in a pharmacy from 1831 at the age of 14, studying chemistry and graduating in 1837 from the College of Pharmacy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He opened a drug store and spent his entire career as a pharmacist. He was professor of pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy from 1846, and in 1852 was one of the founding members of the American Pharmaceutical Association. He worked to improve the standards of drug quality, and was elected association President in 1862. A leader in American pharmacy, he edited the 'American Journal of Pharmacy' for 20 years.
