Description
William Osler teaching medicine, 1880s. Canadian physician William Osler (seated, centre right, 1849-1919) conducting a demonstration in the 'Green Room' at Philadelphia General Hospital, USA. Osler worked here from 1885 to 1889 and was Chair of Clinical Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania from 1884 to 1889. Osler was the first professor of medicine (1889) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA. In 1905 he became a professor at Oxford University, UK. Considered the father of modern medicine, he contributed towards reforms of medical education, founding the practice of student residency in hospitals.
