Description
William Osler at Johns Hopkins, 1890s. Canadian physician William Osler (far left, 1849-1919) with his 13-year-old 'nephew' William Willoughby Francis (1878-1959), his assistant William Sydney Thayer (1864-1932), and Canadian physician Henri Amedee Lafleur (right, 1862-1939) in Lafleur's room at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, USA. Osler is considered the father of modern medicine, making crucial reforms to medical education. He was revered by the medical profession after his death, and Francis (Osler's first cousin, once removed) became the first Osler librarian and helped maintain his memory. Photographed in August 1891.
