Description
William Speirs Bruce (1867-1921), Scottish oceanographer, in academic dress. Bruce initially registered to train as a doctor, but on a visit to Edinburgh to study natural sciences he discovered the new science of oceanography, and this became his lifelong passion. Bruce led the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902-4) that explored the Weddell Sea. One of the achievements of the expedition was the establishment of Omond House, a base on the South Orkney Islands and the oldest permanent base in the Antarctic. Photographed in 1910. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
