Description
Wilkins Ice Shelf. Satellite image showing the location of the Wilkins Ice Shelf (just above and right of centre) on the Antarctic Peninsula. An area of 405 square kilometres broke away from this ice shelf in March 2008, and as of 2009 the rest of the ice shelf (some 14,000 square kilometres) is attached to the land only by a narrow strip of ice. It is thought that global warming will eventually cause the entire ice shelf to be lost. Image data obtained at 14:15 UTC on 29 March 2008, using the MODIS instrument on NASA's Terra satellite.
