Description
Wilkins ice shelf, Antarctica. The Wilkins ice self is a thick sheet of floating ice that is attached to the coastline in Wilkins Sound on the Western side of the Antarctic Peninsula. The Wilkins ice shelf extends for 150 kilometres. In 2009 satellite images revealed that parts of the ice shelf had broken up between it and Charcot Island. It is thought global warming is the cause. Image data acquired on 12 April 2009, by the ASTER instrument on NASA's Terra satellite.
