Description
Wilkins Ice Shelf break-up, 2008. Series of three satellite images (left to right) showing the break-up in February and March 2008 of 405 square kilometres of the 14,000-square-kilometre Wilkins Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula. The first image (28 February) shows a solid ice shelf. The second image (29 February) shows the edge of the shelf thinning and melting (pale blue, centre left). The last image (17 March) shows the broken up area drifting away. The break-up was 405 square kilometres in area. It is thought that global warming will eventually cause the entire ice shelf to be lost. Images obtained by the MODIS sensor on NASA's Terra satellite.
