White Island, satellite image. Satellite image showing the volcano known as White Island (centre right) erupting off the coast of North Island (land mass, bottom), New Zealand. Vegetation is green, water is blue, and cloud is white. White Island, known by the Maori name Whakaari, is an active andesite stratovolcano, that lies 48 kilometres off the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, in the Bay of Plenty. Its last eruption was in 2000/2001 and the volcano is currently New Zealand's most frequently active. Imaged in August 2000.
