Description
Voyager 1 family portrait" of the solar system, showing the Sun and six of the nine planets. The Sun is the bright spot seen at upper left and the positions of the planets are marked by their initial letters. The six colour insets show the images of the planets; Venus, Earth, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus & Neptune. Mercury, Mars & Pluto are not shown. Voyager 1 was launched on 5 September 1977 and visited Jupiter & Saturn before swinging upwards out of the plane of the solar system. This image, taken on 14 February, 1990, represents its final view of the solar system as it speeds off into outer space. In around 40,000 years, it will pass close to the star AC+79 3888."
