Description
Volcanoes on Java. Combined infrared and optical satellite image of volcanoes on part of the island of Java, Indonesia. North is at top. At upper centre is Muria (red). At lower right is Lawu (red). Directly to the west of Lawu is Merapi (red and blue). Clouds appear white, and water is black. To the north of Java is the shallow Java Sea. To the south lies the Indian Ocean (bottom left corner). Merapi is the most active of these volcanoes, having erupted 68 times since 1548. It stands 2911 metres high. In the bay at upper left is the city of Semarang (light blue). Photographed by Landsat 1 on 28th September 1972.
